Cell Phone Service

Cell phones do not work well on Cape San Blas or Indian Pass. Some cell providers do not have any reception at the beaches providing many visitors frustration or a respite from home and work problems. Best advice is to use your phone in Port St. Joe or Apalachicola. There are spots that you can get 2 bars but you need to stop immediately and pull off the road because you may have no reception a 100 yards down the road. The local providers are Sprint-Nextel and Alltel but they don't have any better service. If you have a roof antenna on your car you will do better. My best advice is to relax and enjoy your visit and things back at the office just seem to work out while you are on VACATION. Relax and enjoy yourself....you deserve it.

We have some very good barbecue in this area. Paul Gant has a small trailer on US 98 just west of the Piggly Wiggly on the right side of the road. They have pulled pork, pork ribs and chicken. Their sauce is a little sweet for my taste due to the molasses but good. The side dishes include slaw, potato salad and baked beans [my personal favorite]. They are open Wednesday to Saturday until they run out of food [usually around 3-4PM]. They do catering so if you have a large group call Paul Gant at 227-1473 or 229-9394. During the holiday season or special orders he does smoked hams and turkeys that are great. Try it.

Fishing has been great all spring in the bays and offshore. Speckeled trout, red fish, flounder and mackerel are all plentiful in the bays and near shore. Offshore red snapper, amberjack are there in numbers but less so for grouper. Now, tarpon migration has begun and they are a real sport fisherman's dream. Several in the 200 lb range have been caught and released off Indian Pass and St. Vincent's Island. Florida Fish and Game has said that scallops will be plentiful but small in St. Joseph Bay this year and are asking people to wait until August until they mature.

Forgotten Coast Happenings Update

Summer is here and the area is full of visitors. In July bay scallop harvesting begins [ends in early September] in St. Joseph Bay. There are quantity limits and you will need a Florida fishing license. These morsels are delicate and a special seasonal treat. Port St. Joe will celebrate July 4th on that day. Events center around Frank Pate Park [US 98 and State 71] next to the public boat launch. Activities include food, craft and art vendors open in the AM. Fun and games for the kids including a pirate invasion. There will be live entertainment in the PM and fireworks after dark as well as a lighted boat parade. Should be a fun day for all. August 2 and 3 the Scallop Festival will be at Shipyard Cove next to the Chamber of Commerce building at the end of 4th St. on the bay. Opens at 10AM Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday. Lots of stalls with food, crafts, artwork and much more. Scallops are the featured food at the Lion's/Chamber food tent and they are good. Lots of entertainment and music all day. Come and enjoy the fun. Let me know how you enjoyed these celebrations.

Have you heard about this new real estate term? Now, I am not an expert on this subject nor an attorney but this is my understanding. If a property owner and their mortgagee [ bank, savings and loan etc.] agree that the property owner may proceed to sell the real estate at a price below the debt owed....it is call a "short sale". The mortgagee will do this in lieu of proceeding to foreclosure and it helps everyone to sell the property now and avoid expensive and time consuming legal proceedings. It also enables the buyer to obtain a great buy in today's market. For more details, contact me for local information or your attorney for legal advise..

The Forgotten Coast has been prime nesting for generations of loggerhead, green and leatherback sea turtles. They will begin to look for nesting areas in May and will continue until November this year as in the past. You will notice small groups of people on the beach at first light. These are Turtle Patrol volunteers looking each day for new nests. They will dig down to the nest, move it to higher ground if necessary, mark each nest with protective wire mesh, stakes at each corner, yellow tape connecting each post, description card and warning not to disturb. In about 65-70 days the young sea turtles hatch at night and return to sea. Each nest will have 100-130 eggs. The babies will leave the area and stay at sea for 2 years and then the adult females return to the same beach to lay their eggs and the cycle begins anew.

Forgotten Coast Seafood

This area has some of the best seafood in the world. Fish, shrimp, scallops and oysters. To eat out, my favorite places are The Owl Cafe in downtown Apalachicola and the Bay City Lodge an old fish camp with great fried or broiled seafood again in Apalachicola. All the others have disappointed me in the past. Then there is the Indian Pass Raw Bar, quirky and good for shrimp and oysters. Must visit once. To purchase for cooking at home, don't get it at the local supermarkets, buy it from a local: shrimp ladies Connie and Laurie make home deliveries in the area each week need to buy 10 lbs. or more but it is fresh off their own boat 899-1497 or 653-8788. For fish and oysters go to Buddy Ward's 13 mile on C-30, Allen's on US 98 as you enter Apalachicola, Braswell's Seafood on US 98 next to the Bayside BP gas station again in Apalachicola or St. Joe Shrimp Co. on 30-A in Simmons Bayou. Good eating!!!!

Seasons at Cape San Blas

Most people think Florida does not have a change of seasons.....not true. The seasonal change is more subtle and different from most of the US. January is our coldest month and we normally have at least 1 hard freeze. Winter is mostly over by mid February and then we have almost daily morning fog. Pine trees are tasseled and your car is covered in a yellow blanket. Wild flowers make their presence known with buttercups, thistle, black eyed susans leading the way and the azaleas and camellias in early March. March is also our wind month. It can blow 20-30 mph for days on end without any let up. Lots of bad hair days or just wear a hat. April daytime temps are in the 70-80 range, low humidity and abundant sunshine. Water temps start to climb and are at least 70 going up to the high 80's in the heart of the summer. April is also the time that our visiting bald eagles have their young ready to fly north to Canada for the summer. Fishing is great in the bays and the Gulf of Mexico. May is the start of summer, vacation visitors, more traffic, locals venture into the water as it nears 80 degrees....not before as we all have Florida thermostats. May, June, July, August are the busy months with happy visitors and people on the beaches. The Pig's parking lot is nearly full every day. Scallop season in St. Joe Bay runs from July until September. Very tasty!! The locals have the worst tans so if you want information don't look for someone with a killer tan. September we get our beach back from the tourists and things slow down , still hot and humid but every now and then we get a hint of Fall with lower temps and humidity. October is wild flower month. The sand dunes seem to come alive with color and our bald eagles return to their same nests and start to plan for a new family. Temps are in the 70's and low humidity. You should see the stars at night. November brings Thanksgiving and most absentee property owners are here to renew their rental contract and make repairs or upgrades to their rental property. One cold snap and the fish head for deeper water. Don't go fishing late in the year as it is tough to find them. December is still very nice with temps in the low 70's until late in the month but the water has cooled to about 70 degrees. After Christmas come the snow birds from the upper Midwest and Canada and the seasons start all over again.
