The Dead Lakes Recreation Area is just a short drive off Hwy 71 in Wewahitchka.
Here you’ll find a variety of activities including hiking, fishing, boating, camping and nature viewing. Amongst the vast wildlife — raccoons, deer, rabbits, turtles, snakes and alligators — nature enthusiasts are enveloped in an abundance of trees including longleaf pines, magnolia and bald cypress. Another tree you’ll see is the source of World-Famous Tupelo Honey. The White Tupelo tree grows along the wet banks of the Dead Lakes and if visiting in April-May, you might catch a glimpse of them in full bloom.
The landscape of the Dead Lakes is a photographer’s dream with the mossy branches and unique dimensions of the Cypress dotting the Lakes. This area is also home to a variety of bird species such as the Osprey, Ibis and Heron. The park is open from 8:00 am till sundown year-round and provides visitors with a boat ramp, fresh-water trails and a camping area. There is a playground and horseshoe pit close by the picnic pavilion. The park also has restrooms and a bath house.
Camping by tent or RV at the park is very popular and is first-come, first served and is less than $20 a night. There are a total of 22 RV spots and 8 for tent campers. The grounds keeper, Bob, lives next door and is very helpful! If you have any questions give him a call, (850) 227-8693.
If you really want to see the beauty of the cypress and wildlife of the Dead Lakes, we recommend getting on the water! Bring your boat to put in at the free launch or one of our local guides can take you on an eco-tour through the winding habitat.
